How to Stay Safe on 4th of July

Be sure to follow these safety tips to make the most of your 4th of July celebration.

The 4th of July holiday is another time for a fun get-together with friends and family around the rough midpoint of the summer. Along with Memorial Day and Labor Day, Independence Day is another summer holiday where you can fire up the grill for a barbecue. But be sure that your deck is stable enough for all of your guests, and be sure to follow these other safety tips to make the most of your 4th of July celebration.

Staying Safe Around Fireworks

If there’s one difference that sets Independence Day apart from Memorial Day and Labor Day, it’s the presence of fireworks. Fireworks have always been a traditional way to help celebrate the country’s birthday, but you need to stay safe and smart if you plan on lighting some – use your common sense. Start by finding out which fireworks you can legally use – something that is legal in Pennsylvania may not be in Maryland and vice versa. The best advice is to watch the shows conducted by fireworks experts.

Staying Safe Around the Grill

Another popular 4th of July tradition is to use the grill for hot dogs, hamburgers, and even pulled pork. Keep the grill well clear of any obstructions by giving it at least ten feet of clear space on all sides and be sure to let it have it have plenty of ventilation. Don’t use lighter fluid on your grill, even if you think that will heat up the coals faster. Once you’re done with the grill, make sure it’s cooled off and extinguish the coals with some water before disposing of them.

Staying Safe On Your Boat

Having a backyard party is one thing, but what if you’re celebrating out on the water. Remember that all of the usual tips for boating safety and recommendations for keeping boat insurance rates still apply. You might be taking a day off, but accidents aren’t. Get your boat properly inspected before taking it out on the water and make sure that you have enough life preservers that are in good enough condition to leave the dock. Don’t drink while piloting your boat, and keep an eye on weather reports – a thunderstorm on the 4th of July can ruin your backyard barbecue or make a last minute run to the grocery store for more buns and condiments miserable, but a storm on the water can be dangerous for the most experienced boaters.
